Almeda Bernice Sherwood, 89, a former resident of Bremen, Wakarusa, South Bend and Plymouth from 1945 to 1996, moving to Clarksville, Ind., in 1996, died on Friday, July 2, 2004, in the Wedgewood Health Care Center, Clarksville, Ind.
Born in Bremen, Ind., on January 29, 1915, Almeda was the daughter of Dorsey Dee and C. Estella Mae Hodges Whiteman. She graduated from Wakarusa High School.
On June 28, 1941, in Goshen, she and Ellsworth Leroy “Roy” Sherwood were married. Roy died on May 21, 1999.
Almeda had worked at the Oaks Restaurant. She was a homemaker as well as a waitress. She loved flowers and had a bountiful garden, full of all kinds of blooms. She collected antique glass and enjoyed reading and working puzzles.
She was very involved in her religion and was an active and devoted member of Jehovahs’ Witnesses.
Almeda is survived by a son, Phillip M. Sherwood, Clarksville, Ind., and by a daughter and her husband, Barbara Ann and Jay Bucy, Prospect, Ky.
A grandson, Daniel Lee Cooley, Clearwater, Fla., and a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Cooley Carrico, New Albany, Ind., survive as well, together with four great-grandchildren. They are: Brooke Danielle Cooley and Bryce James Cooley of Clearwater, Fla., and Landon Phillip Carrico and Carson Todd Carrico of New Albany, Ind.
A sister, Fae E. Usery of Elkhart, also survives.
Almeda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and five brothers. They are: Everett, Julian, Robert, Ernest and Merel Whiteman. Two sisters, Alice Shumaker and Elizabeth Ritenour have also died.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Almeda will be in the funeral home on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
