Anthony F. “Tony” Niemiec, 64, of Culver, passed away at 4:58 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014 in Memorial Hospital of South Bend, due to complications from cancer and multiple sclerosis. A resident of Culver for the past eight years, he was formerly of Mokena, Illinois.

He was born on March 23, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Louis Niemiec. Tony graduated from Oak Lawn High School in 1967. He then entered military service during the Vietnam War Era and was a proud member of the Army 101st Airborne, Spec 4.

On September 2, 1973 in Oak Forest, Illinois, he took the former Christine Paul as his bride. Over the next 40 years together they enjoyed life and a growing family. Their three children are; Jeannette Patti Niemiec and husband John of Plymouth, Marc Anthony Niemiec and fiancé Nicole of Crown Point, IN with granddaughter; Marciana Christine and Jessica Lynn Eby and husband Jon of Knox. One sister Linda Suzuki of Portland, Oregon also survives with several nieces and nephews.

Tony was preceded in death by a dear son Jeffrey Edward Niemiec, his father Louis, a sister Cheryl Shankman and his in-laws; Richard H. and Jeannette Paul.

A hard worker, Tony was employed for over 25 years with Mobil Chemical (Pactiv) in Frankfort, Illinois and retired in 2007 as a lead mechanic with Berry Plastics in Alsip, Illinois.

Tony enjoyed working on cars and was fascinated with guns, target shooting and working on them.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Culver and a member of the Culver V.F.W. Post 6919.

Friends may call from 1 – 5 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 2nd in the JOHNSON-DANIELSON FUNERAL HOME, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. EST Monday, February 3rd in ST. MARY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 124 College Avenue, Culver where calling will continue after 9 a.m. Fr. Jeffery Largent will celebrate Mass.

Military honors will immediately follow provided by members of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Culver Post 6919.

A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. CST on Monday in the chapel of RESURRECTION CATHOLIC CEMETERY, 1201 Archer Avenue, Justice, Illinois.
