Betty J. Lehiy

Betty Jane (Sickmiller) Lehiy passed away at her home on Upas Rd., Plymouth, surrounded by her loving family, at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

A Marshall County resident all of her life, Betty was born in Plymouth on February 6, 1938, the daughter of Leo and Ilo Marie (Brewer) Sickmiller. She graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1956.

On July 9, 1961, in Bremen, Betty and Carl R. Lehiy were married. Carl died on December 3, 2003.

Betty worked at McCord’s, Speedway and also worked almost singlehandedly as a cook, manager, clerk and cashier for the Red-D Mart Marathon for 10 years, retiring for medical reasons.

She loved fishing, hunting, watching and feeding ‘her’ birds, ducks and deer which were off limits to hunting. Betty enjoyed cooking and working in her flower garden. She loved Elvis and has insisted that at least one of his hymns be played at her funeral.

Betty is survived by Patricia Ann Hoover, a daughter, and Karl “Bill” (Jody) Lehiy, a son both of Plymouth, Phyllis Bender, her sister in Crown Point, IN. and Karen Lehiy, a daughter-in-law in Plymouth.

Seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren (with one more on the way) also survive along with several nieces, nephews and cousins and Betty’s caregiver, Rosetta Moore, her son Brian’s fiancée.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three sons: Michael Zuelling, Thomas Lehiy, and Brian Lehiy. Four brothers and a sister have also passed. They are Raymond, Lowell, Wilbur and Donavon Sickmiller and Nadine Sack.

Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 1 – 3 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services, officiated by Pastor DeWayne Smith will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the funeral home.

Burial will follow in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
