Donald O. Bormes Sr., 88, passed away peacefully in his home on September 16, 2024, with his devoted wife of 45 years, Barbara A. Bormes, by his side. He fought a long and courageous battle with cancer, a testament to his enduring strength and resilience.
Born to Leo Henry Bormes and Bertha Stratton in Chicago, IL, Don lived a life full of love, family, and unwavering dedication to his faith, country, and community. He is survived by his children Kimberly Bormes (Edward), Tammy Moran (Patrick), Donald O. Bormes Jr. (Nancy), Mark Bormes, Joshua Bormes (Jessica), and Michael Bormes (Amanda). Though his heart bore the grief of losing his children Joseph Todd Bormes, Donald Russell “DR” Bormes, and Theresa Marie Bormes, their memory lived on in every step he took. He is also preceded in death by his brother Thomas Bormes and sister Theresa Weber.
Don’s legacy is carried forward by his 18 grandchildren, who knew him as both “Grandpa” and “Poppy Don.” Each of them, Edward Bormes, Erin Moran, Matthew Moran (Kayla), Jacqueline Bormes, Dr. Kathryn Bormes, MD, Logan Bormes (Lynzie), Michaela Bormes, Liam Bormes, Eli Bormes, Landon Bormes, Eden Bormes, Mila Bormes, Leif Bormes, Bryce Bormes, Charlotte Bormes, Emmerich Bormes, Luka Bormes, and John Hillard, were touched by his wisdom and love. His extended family, including many nieces and nephews, also share in the loss of a man who gave so much of himself to those he cherished.
Don’s career at the Budd Company began in Gary, Indiana, before he transferred to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1982 where he raised his family in Horsham, Pennsylvania. He retired after many years of dedicated service, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and loyalty that spanned decades. His commitment to his profession mirrored the same dedication with which he approached every aspect of his life.
A proud veteran, Don served his country with honor during the Korean War, stationed at Observation Point (OP) 251 “Freedom Bridge.” This chapter of his life instilled in him a deep sense of duty and patriotism, values he carried throughout his days. He later served his community in Sanbornton, New Hampshire, as a member of the Township Board, contributing to the place he called home for 30 years of his retirement with the same passion he brought to everything he did.
Don’s faith was central to his life. He raised his family in the Catholic Church, serving as Eucharistic Minister and achieving the esteemed title of 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. His devotion to his family was a guiding light for those who know him.HIs
Among his many passions, Don found his greatest joy out on the water. Lake Winnisquam in New Hampshire was where he felt truly alive, piloting his boat with the same skill and joy he showed in teaching his family and friends to water ski or simply towing them on rafts, laughter trailing in his wake. His love for adventure extended beyond the lake – Don was a licensed pilot, taking to the skies in his single-engine airplane, a jet skier, golfer, snow skier, and snowmobiler. He built his own computers and took pride in sharing his knowledge and passion for hunting, even teaching Hunter Safety courses.
His culinary talents were appreciated in his household, especially when it came to smoking meat and baking homemade rhubarb pies, creating meals that brought loved ones together. And when he wasn’t mastering the grill, he was out tapping trees and making maple syrup, adding another layer of richness to his life's story.
Above all, Don’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and cherished memories. His family will continue to honor his life by upholding the traditions, values, and strength that he passed down to each of them.
