Dr. Arnold Dunfee

Dr. Arnold Dunfee, DDS, 87, died of natural causes, in Apopka, Florida on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 9:30 p.m.

Dr. Dunfee was a highly skilled and respected dentist in Plymouth for 23 years, retiring from his practice in 1985.

A civic leader, he was active in numerous organizations in Plymouth and across the state.

Born the son of Dr. Clyde Harrison Dunfee DDS and Orpha Pearl Hatfield Dunfee in Etna Green, Ind. on April 18, 1921, Arnold graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1939. He was a standout on the Pilgrim basketball team, receiving All-Conference honors. An all-around excellent athlete, he also participated in football, tennis and track.

Arnold attended Indiana Central College and the Indiana University School of Dentistry. A member of the Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, he graduated in 1953, and opened his practice in Plymouth.

Two years later, in 1955, Arnold was called to serve his country in the United States Army Dental Corps. He held the rank of captain. Honorably discharged in 1957, he returned to Plymouth to resume his practice.

On November 8, 1941, in Plymouth, Arnold and Mary Jayne Ridenoure were married. Mary Jayne died in August of 2006.

Arnold enjoyed golf and antique cars. He was a member of Hoosier Old Wheels, Kaiser Fraser Club of America, Thunderbird Club of America and the Packard Club.

He developed a love of horses over the last few years. Especially Appaloosas. He and his son, David, started raising them about five years ago. He loved sitting in the barn and spending time with them.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, the Masonic Lodge and the Society of the Scottish Rite.

He played golf and was a former member of the Plymouth Country Club, the Placid Lakes Country Club and the Marshall County Historical Society.

Arnold was past-president of the Plymouth High School Alumni, was a Vestryman of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, served on the Marshall County Health Board and served with the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and the Building Committee of John Glenn High School.

He was past-president of the North Central Dental Society, an associate member of the Chicago Dental Society and a member of the Dental Society for Children’s Dentistry. He was also past-president and a long time member of the Indiana State Dental Examiners, served on the Controlled Drug Advisory Committee, the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentists and was a delegate for the Indiana Dental Society.

Arnold is survived by three children: Dr. Michael Tim (Mary Ann) Dunfee, Spencer, Ind.: Frances (Marc) Berger, Elkhart, Ind: David (Jeannie) Dunfee, Apopka, Fla. along with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Two sisters also survive, they are; Barbara Donaldson of South Bend and Lois Elliott of Charlottesville, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter; Laurie Susan, two sisters; Josephine Burch and Laura Dunfee and a brother Joseph Dunfee.

The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., is assisting with local arrangements in Plymouth, where services will be held at a later date.
