Edwin “Extra Fine” L. Miller Jr., 89, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a long time resident of Oneonta, Alabama, died at 4:45 a.m. in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, of a Parkinson related illness on Wednesday, November 1, 2006. “Extra Fine!” was always his reply when asked how he was doing.
Born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Edwin L. Miller, Sr. and Minnie K. Neidlemeyer Miller.
He graduated from Wilkinsburg High School with the class of 1935 and attended what was then Carnegie Tech, now called Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Ed and Madeline Olivia Walker were married on December 31, 1942. She died on January 29, 1979. He then married Dera Alva Hill Glasscock, on February 17, 1985, who resides in Oneonta, Alabama.
Ed was a construction foreman in the Carpenter’s Local 211 and a yardman for Railway Express.
He loved to travel–especially to Alaska. He also enjoyed fishing, raising cattle and eating.
In Murphree Valley, AL, Ed was a member of the Pinegrove Methodist Church and in Wexford, PA, he belonged to the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club.
Ed is survived by his wife, Dera and three children from his first marriage: Edwin L. and Dorothy Miller III, Spotsylvania, VA: Mary E. and James R. Kaufold, Pittsburgh, PA, and Chris R. and Patricia Miller of Plymouth, IN.
Two step-children of his second marriage also survive: they are Chuck and Glenda Hill Snead, AL and Faye Knight of Oneonta.
Nineteen grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and three step-sons, Donald, James and William McIntosh.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
