Elizabeth Ann Carey, born in Fort Wayne on March 14, 1932 to Russell and Marie Figert, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, in Miamisburg, Ohio. She lived a life dedicated to education and community service, touching the lives of many during her career as a teacher with the Kouts, Hamlet, Portage, Monterey, Knox and Morgan Township Schools, from which she retired in 1984.
Elizabeth’s commitment to learning was reflected in her educational journey. After graduating from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne in 1949, she pursued her passion for knowledge further, ultimately achieving her master's degree from Ball State University. This dedication not only shaped her career but also encouraged her students to value education and strive for their own academic goals.
Her legacy as an educator will be fondly remembered by the generations of students she inspired. Elizabeth’s gentle guidance and unwavering support created a nurturing environment in her classroom, fostering a love of learning that extended beyond textbooks.
Elizabeth was united in marriage with Robert Joseph Carey on October 22, 1960 in Chesterton. Together they created countless memories as they blended their families together. Robert preceded her in death on May 5, 1997.
Upon moving to Plymouth, Elizabeth was a faithful member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church member.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth embodied the virtues of kindness and perseverance. Her contributions to the community and dedication to her profession will surely be cherished by those who had the honor of knowing her.
Elizabeth Ann Carey leaves behind a rich legacy through her work and the countless lives she influenced. As we reflect on her impactful life, we celebrate the warmth and wisdom she shared with all who crossed her path.
Elizabeth is survived by her step-daughters, Barbara Carey-Black and Beverly Jo Carey; 3 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; along with siblings, Samuel Figert and Sara Gage.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents, Russell and Marie; and siblings, Russell Figert, Jr., Peter Figert, and Connie Long.
Elizabeth will be laid to rest with her husband in Bass Lake Cemetery in Bass Lake, IN.
