Eugene M. Stewart, Sr., 77, a resident of Garden Court East the past ten years, died at home, 501 Pennsylvania Ave., at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2004. Eugene died, following an illness, in the presence of his family and the Marshall County Hospice. He has made Plymouth his home since 1964.
Born in Riverside, W. Va. on November 7, 1926, Eugene was the son of Manley and Grace Lee Dent Stewart. He attended East Bank W. Va. High School.
A W.W. II and Korean War veteran, Eugene was a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the American Legion Post #27.
Eugene and Naomi E. Egnor were married on August 16, 1946, in Schlyn, W. Va.
A production painter for McCord Corp. for 15 years, Eugene was a former member of the United Auto Workers Union.
A man of many interests, he enjoyed hunting along the river near his home in W. Va.
He loved all sports, especially football, college basketball and the Cubs. He liked birds and living near the river at Garden Court. ‘Grandpa’ enjoyed making his appointed rounds with his children and grand children at their various activities.
A member of the AARP, he was also a Hospice Walk volunteer walker for the past four years.
Eugene is survived by Naomi, his wife of over 57 years and by their children:
James and Sharon Stewart, Plymouth; Patricia and Raymond Harness, Plymouth; Allen and Betty Stewart, Dyersburg, Tn.; Mary and Dennis Hostetler, Plymouth, Grace and Raymond Hummel, Plymouth; Carl Stewart, Plymouth; Betty and Doug Whiteman, Plymouth; Ellen Kaiser and Bryan Brown, Walkerton; Candy and Mike Shufelt, Plymouth; Samantha Stewart, Plymouth.
Twenty-four grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren also survive together with two brothers and four sisters.
His brothers are: Glen Stewart, Newbern Tenn.; and Burl Stewart, ElPaso, TX.
His sisters are: Betty Wheaton, ElPaso, Texas; Lola Stewart, Downers Grove, Ill.; Elizabeth Latshaw, Denver, Colo.; and Thelma Gorczyca, Springfield, Mo.
Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents and two sons: Eugene M. Stewart, Jr., and Kenneth Wayne Stewart. Two grandsons, five brothers and a sister have also predeceased him.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 2, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to funeral services on Saturday.
The funeral services, officiated by the Rev. R.D. Humphrey, pastor of the House of Prayer, 12450 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Plymouth, will be there at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2004.
Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
