Gale E. “Sonny” Gillenwater, a resident at 5731 King Road, Plymouth, for the past 15 years, coming from Benton Harbor, Michigan, died of natural causes in a rest area near Lima, Ohio, on Friday, March 3, 2000.
Sonny was born in Benton Harbor on May 12, 1945, the son of Edward Gale and Maxine Hartline Gillenwater. He attended schools in Benton Harbor and obtained his G.E.D. after he was discharged from the army.
A veteran of the Vietnam era, he was in the Military Police in the United States Army.
On August 6, 1994, in the Olive Branch United Brethren Church, Lakeville, Ind., Gale and Barbara A. Roush were married.
A truck driver most of his life, Sonny drove for J&Y Services for the past six months.
He liked fishing and he loved his pets. He collected model semis and enjoyed sharing coffee and conversation with his friends at the Truck Stop.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Barbara, two daughters and two step-daughters. His daughters are Rhonda Gillenwater, Ohio, and Tori and Aaron Obertsfeld, Michigan. Debbie and Jim Roark, Bremen, and Lynn Wiegand, Indianapolis, are his step-daughters.
Seven grandchildren, his mother, Maxine Gillenwater, Benton Harbor, Mich., a sister, Sonja and Tito Rodreguez, Stevensville, Mich., and two brothers, Gary of Riverside, Mich., and Robin Gillenwater of Benton Harbor,Mich., also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Friends may visit with Sonny’s family on Tuesday, March 7, 2000, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate at Sonny’s funeral in the funeral home on Wednesday March 7, 2000, at 2 p.m.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts may be given in Sonny’s name to the American Heart Association.
