George A. Bergman, 82, 501 Pennsylvania Ave., Plymouth, died of natural causes in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2006.
A lifetime Plymouth resident, George was born in Plymouth on February 4, 1924. He was the son of Edward J. and Grace Fanning Bergman.
He attended Lincoln High School, leaving after his junior year to work in his family’s dry cleaning business. He worked with his father and two brothers in the North Center St. plant which was closed in 1950 and moved to the laundry building. George took over all operation of the business in 1965 until 1971.
George served in the United States Army during World War II, from July 1944 to August 1946.
He and Marciel Kay Miller were married in Plymouth on February 21, 1953. She died on March 17, 1974. George and Alice Armstrong were married on May 25, 1975, in Plymouth, she too has preceded in death.
George was employed for several years for the City of Plymouth as a Water Department Dispatcher.
A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed gardening and wood working.
He was a devoted member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.
George is survived by a step-daughter, Vicki Paul, Eustis, Florida, and three step-sons: Dennis McGlinsey, Madison, Alabama, Bud McGlinsey, Elkhart, Indiana and Bart McGlinsey of Goshen, Indiana.
A sister, Margaret Peregrine and two nieces, Susan Rogers and Phyllis Kelsey, all of Plymouth, and a nephew, Tom Johnson, of Bruce Lake, Indiana, survive as well.
George was preceded in death by a step-son, Lee McGlinsey and three sisters, Mary E. Kelsey, Martha A. Miller and Julia Johnson. Two brothers, John Edward Bergman and Jim Bergman have also died.
There will be no visitation and no funeral services.
Burial will be in the New Oakhill Cemetery’s mausoleum.
Memorial gifts in George’s name may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
