James N. Hartog, 80, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.

Born on October 13, 1943, in Crown Point, Indiana, he was the son of Jake and Helen (Cox) Hartog. On June 14, 1996, James married Dawn Bingle in Bourbon, IN, she survives.

James worked for United Technologies and National Bi-Products in Bourbon before retiring in 2003. He was known by his family as someone who was strong with a streak of stubbornness, but a man who possessed a loving, compassionate side that absolutely lived his life for his family, especially his grandchildren. James enjoyed hosting sleepovers for the grandchildren where you could often find him in the playroom, sometimes even in the midnight hours playing with them.

He loved to cook and was known for his special coney dog sauce that could be used for any meal. James also enjoyed a good tractor show and never missed a Western he didn’t enjoy watching. Of course, sneaking a nap in between things was a must. His family recalls being in full conversation with him, and then suddenly you would hear snoring. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife Dawn of Plymouth; children: Michael Hartog and Mark Hartog of Argos; Krista (Zack) Schuyler of Fortville, IN; Jared (Ashley) Sult of Plymouth; grandchildren: Bryce, Kimber, Addison, Zac, Liam, Avery; siblings: Betty Davies of Wheeler, IN; Jackie Hartog of Wabash, IN; Dan (Donna) Hartog of North Manchester.

James is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Joyce, siblings: Jake, Bob, Ronnie and grandchild Sult.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
