John F. Ruff, 93, a lifetime Marshall County resident, died of natural causes Wednesday morning, June 15, 2005. John died on the family homestead where he was born and spent his life working the ground, 7293 Plymouth-LaPorte Trail, Plymouth. He was born July 23, 1911, the son of Charles W. and Ella Glass Ruff.
As a child he attended the old brick West Township School.
On October 29, 1932, John and Mildred C. Marsh were married in Knox, Ind. They were married for 65 years. Mildred died on October 30, 1997. They enjoyed traveling to Florida and John loved to fish the lakes of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Aside from farming, John found the time to drive a school bus and serve on many boards; the Gas Rationing Board during the War, the A.S.C. Board and was a member of the Board of Directors of Farmer’s Mutual Insurance up until this year. He also had served as Secretary/Treasurer of the organization from 1965 to 1988, passing the responsibilities to his son David.
John, a dedicated and responsible citizen, served as West Township Trustee for eight years, from 1954 until 1962. He was an avid reader of political history and current events.
A member of the Tyner I.O.O.F. and the Plymouth Moose Lodge 741, John was also affiliated with the Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by three daughters and their spouses; a son and his wife and a daughter-in-law.
They are, daughters, Patricia and Cleon Beatty; Carol J. and Dominic Brizzolara , all of Plymouth, and Janice K. and Michael Hall of Franklin, Ind.
John’s son and daughter-in-law is David A. and Alice Ruff of Plymouth. His daughter-in-law, the widow of his son John R. Ruff, is Sandra E. Ruff, also of Plymouth. Nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren also survive.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, John, and three sisters and a brother. The sisters were Edna Welch, Blanche Matz and Hazel Ruff and the brother was Ralph Ruff.
Friends will be welcomed by the family to celebrate John’s life on Friday, June 17, 2005, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth. A Tyner I.O.O.F Lodge memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, the Rev. Paul McBride will officiate.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
