John R. Sheets, 74, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2024, after a quickly-progressing cancer. He was born in Nappanee, Indiana to Doris Jean (Peters) and Charles (Bud) Sheets on June 10, 1950. He was very inquisitive and adventurous as a young boy: swimming, playing in the woods, and creating entertainment. He mowed lawns, delivered newspapers, and worked at a local drive-in, where he earned special responsibilities from his boss due to his work ethic. He played football and wrestled at Plymouth High School. He was involved with the Corvette Club in Plymouth for several years. He attended and graduated from Ball State University, taking some time out to enlist in the Air Force where he played in the bugle corps, performing around Colorado. He then taught school in Lakevillle, IN and two different periods at Plymouth High School, where he taught Industrial Arts, Building Trades, and coached wrestling. He worked for many years for Pella Windows in sales.
John enjoyed bowling, which he did for most of his adult life. He spent time with a special group of friends playing Euchre for the day and eating food all the men brought. He became involved with darts at the American Legion in the last several years, practicing at home and working to improve his game. He loved to travel on his scooter, exploring the areas around his home and enjoying the fresh air. He spent a lot of time with Sister Mary, from Ancilla, documenting the bat population. He loved cats and had one or more for most of his adult years. He was a man who would give you the shirt off his back, and if you came back the next day needing another, he’d find one.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Larry, and sister Nancy. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey and his companion of 12 years, Susan Overcash.
