In failing health for the past several years, Lavon A. “Charlie” Dunn, 86 died at 5:19 p.m. Friday in the emergency room of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center – Plymouth Campus. Known to many in the Marshall County farming community over the past 55 years, he specialized in sheep. Born in Star City, Indiana on Christmas Eve of 1918, he was the only child of Archie Monroe and Florence Ioma (Parcell) Dunn. Soon thereafter his father would be killed in WW I.
Charlie attended Plymouth schools in his younger years and shared fond memories with his family. Charlie was one who would listen to others and offer straight up advice especially to his attentive grandchildren.
An employee of the Uniroyal Corporation in Mishawaka for 28 years, he retired as a key operator on May 6, 1978.
On June 22, 1973 he married longtime co-worker Betty M. Riser in Goshen, Indiana and together they experienced life on the family farm. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and pet Border collie – Spud. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking and seldom missed baking an Angel Food cake with pink frosting accompanied with strawberry ice cream for family members birthdays. He was a member of the LaPaz American Legion Post 385, NSAA and ISA Sheep Associations and Union Local No. 65.
Charlie will be missed by his wife Betty, two surviving sons, one daughter and their families. They are: son Robert L. Dunn of Plymouth and two granddaughters; Samantha “Sam” R. Dunn with children Isaiah and Ashton; granddaughter Roberta J. and her husband Deane Norris and step grandson Andy his wife Shelly Hartman and their child Allissa. Son John C. and wife Dorthy Dunn of Plymouth and grandson Danny Dunn, step granddaughter Denise and her husband Roscoe White with children Michael and Brandon and step grandson Lonnie and wife Tammy Wireman with children Michael and Cody.
Daughter Susan E. (Fraschetti) and husband Dennis Johnson of Plymouth and grandsons Ty Jay and Ryan Fraschetti.
Preceeding in death were his parents and one son Pfc. Michael Dewayne Dunn, who also died while serving his country.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Charlie Dunn on Monday, July 18th from 5 – 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. Plymouth, where calling will continue after 7 a.m. Tuesday July 19th until time of services in the funeral home at 11 a.m. The Rev. Tom Hostetler, pastor of the Bremen Church of the Brethren will officiate. Burial will follow in the Morris Cemetery, US 6 west of LaPaz.
