Leona Hammel, 400 W. Washington St. died of natural causes in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2006, just 16 days before her 85th birthday.
Leona was born in North Dakota on April 24, 1921. She was the daughter of Irvin and Ethel Patton Bottorff. She went to school in Plymouth.
She was married to George Hammel.
She worked at Easy Heat and Wire Company in Lakeville, Ind., retiring in 1983.
After the death of her husband in 1989, Leona stayed to herself and never got out much, according to her family.
She was a member of the Blissville Church of the Brethren and a former member of the Eastern Star.
Leona is survived by a nephew, John and Sharon Funk of Elkhart and two nieces: Donella & Lowell Emmons of LaPaz and Diana Stanton of South Bend.
Several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews survive as well.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, David Hammel and a sister, Donnabell Funk.
Funeral services will be held privately.
Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Indiana.
