Mabel Casto Dowd

Mabel Casto Dowd, 92, died of natural causes at 5:50 am . on Christmas morning, Wednesday, December 25, 2002, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth. Mabel spent much of her childhood in North Judson. For a time she resided in Buchanan , Mich. , but settled in the Plymouth area over 30 years ago and currently resided at 208 Cortland St. , LaPaz. Born the daughter of David and Catherine Bame Black, in Arlington , Ohio , on February 19, 1910 , Mabel attended North Judson , Ind. , schools. She was first married in 1927, in Knox, Ind., to Walter Casto. Walter died in 1965. In 1972, Mabel and Everett Dowd were married in Culver. Everett preceded her in death on September 5, 1987. She and Walter were owners and operators of a restaurant in North Judson , Ind. , for a period of time. In Plymouth she worked at Vic Stockman’s Parkside Laundromat. Handy with her hands, Mabel was a seamstress for many years as well as being an expert crocheter and knitter. She enjoyed canning, bingo and traveling which most often included fishing trips with her husband Walter. She and Everett spent several winters in the Cape Coral area of Florida . Mabel attended the First Community Church of God in LaPaz. She was a former member of the Moose and Eagles Lodges of Plymouth. Three daughters and two sons survive her death. They are: Marguerite (William) Mohr, Winamac; Shirley (Gale) Reese, Plymouth ; Linda (Ed) Bope, LaPaz; Walter (Vera) Casto, Pinehurst , N.C. ; and Howard (Anne) Casto, Smyrna , Tenn. Fifteen grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands and three sisters and five brothers. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2002 , in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St .., Plymouth , and for one hour prior to funeral services on Saturday. The Saturday, December 28, 2002 , services will be in the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery , Plymouth . Memorial gifts in memory of Mabel may be made to the First Community Church of God, LaPaz.
