Mary M. Rutherford, 86, formerly of Elkhart, Tyner and Plymouth, died of natural causes in The Oaks Retirement Center, Avon Park, Fla., at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005. Mary was born in Mishawaka, Ind., on June 22, 1919. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mabel Hayn and graduated from Tyner High School.
Married twice, her first husband was Lewis Shirk. Following his death, she then married Harvey Rutherford who has also died.
Mary worked as a book keeper and payroll clerk. She was formerly a member of the Blissville Church of the Brethren.
Mary is survived by two sons: Donald Shirk, Sebring, Fla. and Daniel and Priscilla Shirk, Lake Whales, Fla.
Three grandchildren also survive. They are: Lara A. Bachtel, Plymouth, Ind.; David J. Shirk, Argos, Ind., and Joshua D. Shirk, South Bend, Ind.
Also surviving Mary’s death are two sisters and two brothers. Her sisters are: Mildred Kruse, Titusville, Fla., and Ruth Newberg, South Bend, Ind. Her brothers are Paul Hayn, Plymouth and Donald Hayn, Argos, Ind.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands and a sister, Helen O’Hara.
Family graveside services will be held in Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 S. U.S. 31, South Bend, Ind., at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2005. The Rev. Greg Bouck, a pastor of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church will officiate.
