Nancy J. (Thornburg) Martin

Nancy J. (Thornburg) Martin, 55, of Valparaiso, a former Plymouth and Hobart resident, died following an extended illness in St. Margaret-Mercy Hospital, Hammond on Saturday at 8:14 a.m. in the company of those she loved.

Born February 11, 1951 in Plymouth, she is the daughter of James O. and Irene (Sobinski) Thornburg. She is a graduate of Plymouth High School with the Class of 1969 and attended Indiana State University, Terre Haute. Nancy would retire from the Internal Revenue Service in 1998 after 12 years of service.

She pursued many interests when her health would allow. Her greatest interest was her family especially time spent with her grandchildren. She enjoyed time outdoors gardening, tending to her yard and fishing local lakes. She knew and appreciated antiques, she loved making and sharing her specialty cheesecakes, creating crafts and quilts for family members and spending time caring for her pets – especially felines.

Nancy is survived by her longtime friend and companion Nick Hudak of Valparaiso, her father James Thornburg of Donaldson, two daughters; Stephanie R. (Dennis) Johnson of Terre Haute and Julia M. (J.J.) Hosch of Hobart and six grandchildren. They are; Danyelle Martin, Sara Hosch, Hannah Hosch, Caleb Hosch, Brittany Johnson and Linda Johnson. Also surviving is a sister; Carol L. (Mark) Jeffirs of Plymouth, a brother; Mark J. (Julie) Thornburg of Zionsville, Ind. along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Irene on September 22, 2004 and a brother John E. Thornburg who died January 1, 1979.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, February 28th, from 4 – 7 p.m. E.S.T. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Ind. where services will be held at 7 p.m. following visitation. The Rev. David Kerkove, pastor of the Plymouth Church of the Brethren will officiate. At her request, cremation will take place.
