Richard N. Spaid

Lifetime area resident, Richard N. Spaid, 74, 13274 W. 5th Road, Plymouth, died, following an extended illness, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Richard was born in LaPaz, Ind., on Aug. 1, 1927. He was the son of Alva L. and Ruth C. Miller Spaid Woolley of Plymouth. He attended West township school. During World War II, Richard served two years in both the United States Army and the Merchant Marines. He was a 35-year member of the American Legion, Post 385 at LaPaz, the Voiture 40 / 8, Marshall County Post 1511, and the Bremen V.F.W. Post 8972 for 40 years. On April 16, 1955, at Koontz Lake, Richard and Violet M. DuVall were married. He was a heavy equipment operator for 29 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Operating/Engineers Local 150. Richard enjoyed stock car racing, NASCAR events and watching his grandchildren in their sporting activities. He is survived by his wife Violet of 46 years and his mother, Ruth C. Woolley of Plymouth. His children and their families are three daughters; Dixie and Alan Geddes and their children, Misty and Joyce of Washington state; Linda J. and George Truhler and their son, Ronald, of Walkerton; Kathy L. Alexander and her children, Christopher, Jessica, Samuel and Joely of Plymouth. Two sons also survive. They are: Garry L. Spaid and his children, Renee, Scott and Joshua of Florida, and Larry A. Spaid, his daughter, Danielle and his fiancee, Sharon, Plymouth. Seven great-grandchildren also survive together with three sisters and four brothers. They are: Donna and Joe Paone and Nona and John Kuhn, all of Sebring, Florida; and Connie and Joe Castro, Plymouth. His brothers are: Earl and Cris Spaid, Elkhart, Russell and Eva Spaid, Plymouth, Louis and Kristy Spaid, Wheatland, Wyoming and David and Kristine Spaid, Linden, Tenn. Four step-sisters and five step-brothers also survive together with numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his father, his step-father, Arthur Woolley and Mickey, an infant sister and a step sister. Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A 40 / 8 Memorial service will be held at 8 p.m., following visitation. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002. The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Morris Park Cemetery, west of LaPaz, where military honors will be accorded Richard by the LaPaz American Legion Post 385.
