Richard W. Gaines, 65, a resident of Tippecanoe for the past year has died following a short illness. Richard also a former resident of Columbus, Ohio, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, October 15th in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center – Plymouth Campus.
He is the son of James O. and Grace B. (Sutherlin) Gaines. Richard was born in Plymouth on April 3, 1944 and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1962.
Richard had worked in the production plant of Honda Premier in Marysville, Ohio for several years. He then served as an aide in group homes for the handicapped.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports like baseball greats; Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra. He was often found at garage sales and flea markets.
He is survived by five children including Ann Marie Gaines of Cleveland, Ohio and several grandchildren. Also surviving are his seven sisters and two brothers. They are: Violet Ray, Shirley DeBow, Elizabeth Ward, Brenda Carter, Barbara Dickson, Loretta Keehn, Roger Gaines and Joseph Gaines along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Diane, two sisters; Caroline Kitts and Evelyn Gaines.
The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m., Monday, October 19, 2009 in the New Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel. Services will follow visitation at 1 p.m. in the Chapel with Rev. Glen Mitchell presiding. Burial will immediately follow.
