Ruth Elaine Payne, a beloved member of the Plymouth community, passed away quietly on February 7, 2025 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth at age 75. Elaine was born on April 26, 1949 to Kenneth and Ruth Louise (Mertz) Bonney, marking the beginning of a life that would touch so many hearts.

A proud graduate of Plymouth High School, Class of 1967, Elaine continued her education by attending two years of business school. She began her career as a secretary at Sunrise Chapel in the mid-1980s, serving the church for nearly a decade. Her dedication to the community continued as she took on the important role of a crossing guard at Webster School, ensuring the safe passage of countless children for many years. In 2012, she retired from Country Charm Cleaners, where she worked tirelessly as a bookkeeper and attendant for 17 years.

Elaine was a woman of deep faith, having attended Sunrise Chapel before becoming a cherished member of Plymouth Wesleyan Church. Every Sunday, her radiant personality and warm smile greeted churchgoers, making them feel right at home. Known for her welcoming nature, Elaine was a true friend to many, always extending her kindness and support to anyone in need, whether it be a few dollars to help out or simply a compassionate ear to listen.

In her free time, Elaine found joy in watching her beloved soap operas, listening to WFRN, and escaping into the pages of a good book. Her vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication to her community will forever be remembered, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and friendship that will continue to shine in the hearts of those she touched.

Elaine will be dearly missed by her son, John Allen Payne; grandchildren, Erik and Leah; honorary children, Anna Gillam and Sarah Jo Hawes; honorary grandchildren, Tyler (Kendra) Newton and Donovan Newton; honorary great-grandchild, Wrenley Newton; sister, Mary Drye; along with friends, Betty Bloomfield and Leonard A. Balsley.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Ruth; husband, John Payne; and in-laws, John and Thelma Payne.
