Salatiel “Sal” Mendez, Sr., 77, of Plymouth, Indiana, peacefully passed away December 3, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his loved ones, after a brief courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Amalia “Molly” Mendez, and grandsons, Marcello Mendez and Manuel Mendez. He is survived by his children, J. Antonio Mendez (Lucrecia), Amalia “Molly” Richey (Ryan), Salatiel “Sal” Mendez Jr. (Jodi), Maurilio Mendez (Monica), and Erica K. Mendez (Brendan) and grandchildren, Airman 1st Class Austin Richey, Tyler Richey, Winifryd “Finnley” Kareen, Mateo Mendez, Macario Mendez, and Marquez Mendez.
Sal was born February 9, 1947, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. He married his sweetheart, Amalia “Molly” Mendez, on January 31, 1971, and they later settled in Plymouth, Indiana, where they raised their children. Sal was a hard worker, who provided for his family as a member of the United Steelworkers of America and worked at both Bremen Castings and Dalton Foundry for over 40 years. He was a proud United States citizen and exemplified the American dream. He honored both his oldest son, oldest grandson, and all those who served in the military. He spent his free time enjoying nature on his patio and took pride maintaining his lawn, birdhouses and plants. He loved his Plymouth community and was often seen waving to passersby’s on his John Deere riding lawnmower.
Sal will be remembered for his warm heart, caring soul, and strong will. He was full of joy and laughter and was an example of strength and courage to the end. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 9645 Deer Trail, Plymouth, IN 46563. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:00 PM. Flowers can be sent to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Friday, December 20, 2024.
Burial will take place immediately after the services at Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, Indiana.
Memorial contributions are directed towards Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home which will benefit Fair Haven Foundation,1702 West 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202-2031, an organization supporting families going through cancer treatment, honoring Sal’s legacy.
