Sherman E. Emmons

March 17, 1923 — July 14, 2008

Sherman E. Emmons, 85, died at 6:00 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2008, following an extended illness, in the V.N.A. Hospice Center, Valparraiso, Indiana.

Born March 17, 1923, in LaPaz Junction, Indiana, he was the son of Sherman E. and Thela C. Wright Emmons, Sr.. An area resident most of his life, he graduated from Lakeville High School with the class of 1942. A veteran of W.W. II, Sherman had served in the U.S. Army-Air Force. He was a P. O. W. in Germany for 15 months.

Sherman and Nancy E. Erbaugh were married in Lakeville on September 1, 1946. Nancy preceded him in death on May 8, 2003.

He had worked at Studebaker in South Bend both prior to and after he was in the service, until they closed in 1963. He then ran a Custom Body Shop in Rochester and later was an appraiser for Franler’s Insurance until his retirement in 1985

A former member of the Plymouth V.F.W., he also had been a member of the American Legion in Walkerton and LaPaz. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Sherman is survived by a daughter, Carol Anne and son-in-law, Dennis Turner, Bedford, IN, two grandsons and two granddaughters. The grandsons are: Kent A. and Jamie Nunemaker, Wanatah, and their children, Rylee, Nicole and Kyle Sherman Nunemaker; Ryan Patrick and Kelly Nunemaker, Valparaiso, and their children Haley Marie and Hunter Michael Nunemaker; the granddaughters: Rachel A. and her husband, Bruce Kenney live in Bozeman, Montana and Michelle L. Gerstein and her children, Kylie C., Alivia and Natalie, who live in Ames, Iowa.

Also surviving are two brothers: brothers, Dennis L. Emmons of Plymouth and Lowell Emmons of LaPaz and a sister, Wilma Rensforth of Plymouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two sons: Patrick B. Emmons in 1973 and Martin D. Emmons in 1994 and five brothers: Ernest E., David D., Everett O., Ward L. and Guy K. Emmons and a sister, Joyce Mutz.

There will be no visitation or service.

Interment will be in the Parks Cemetery, Bourbon, Indiana.

Memorials in Sherman’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
