Donaldson, Ind. – Sister Teresa Wappel, 86, a Poor Handmaid of Jesus Christ, died at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Ind. Born in Chicago, Ill., on May 29, 1916, she was the daughter of Frank and Teresa Graf Wappel. She entered the convent on June 25, 1934 and professed her first vows two years later on June 25, 1936. An educator, she held a master’s degree in education. Sister Teresa was an elementary school teacher in parochial schools in Indiana and Illinois for 51 years. She served as a principal for seven years. In Indiana she taught in Gary at St. Ann and St. Mark. For 11 years she was at St. Monica’s in Mishawaka. She also taught at St. Mary’s in Hammond and at St. Catherine’s in Siena. She taught in Chicago at St. Henry’s, Angel Guardian and St. Augustine’s. In Belleville, she was at St. John’s and in Edwardsville at St. Boniface. In 1990, Sister Teresa retired at the Catherine Kasper Home. She is survived by John Wappel, a brother in Westwood, MA., and by several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m., at the Catherine Kasper Home. The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Teresa will be officiated by the Rev. Edward Konerman, S.J., at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in the Catherine Kasper Chapel. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Donaldson, Ind. The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Ind, is in charge of the arrangements.
