Stephen Douglas Angel, 76, of Plymouth passed away unexpectedly on Monday June 12, 2023, at the St. Joseph Medical Center after fending off a lengthy illness with unrelenting optimism. Steve was born on May 13, 1947, in Warsaw, Indiana to the late Marjorie Rose Angel, whose own passing is still keenly felt by those who loved her.
He graduated from North Webster High School then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as an X-Ray technician. One of the highlights of his time in the Army was getting to explore Greenwich Village’s music scene during the 60’s. After his stint in the military, he threw himself into music. He was a member of several local rock bands, including EAST WEST GENISIS and Pink Noise. In the local scene, he was the towheaded blonde (and typically barefoot) singer known for his unrestrained rendition of PROUD MARY, and though he loved rock music, he was equally moved by classical composures or THE CARPENTERS, one of his favorite bands.
He married Becky Ann Morse on February 28, 1970 and despite divorcing, the two remained lifelong friends who always spoke of each other with obvious affection. He remarried on March 20, 1977, to Patricia Singleton, who preceded him in death on August 7, 2017. His devotion to Pat would last a lifetime. It was around this time that Steve found the Lord and became a valued member of Barbee Baptist church, and later, Plymouth Bible Baptist Church, where he met Pastor Lowe, a friend and invaluable assist to him in his later days. His passion for music never left him; he served as church Music Director for most of his adult life.
Steve was employed with Lakeland Sanitation/Waste Management thru out his adult years and his children still treasure the memory of those Saturday mornings where they rode in the truck beside him, chocolate milk in hand, as he’d work his route. After retirement he worked in the Walmart Produce Department part time, which suited his highly-personable spirit and buoyant energy well.
He is survived by his children, Stephenie White of Vancouver, Washington, Jada Angel of San Antonio, Texas and Joshua and Chandra Angel of Plymouth, Indiana. To those he loved, he gave his all, with great selflessness. He was also a father to Tamie Jara of New Braunfels, Texas, who came into his life at the age of 1, and a dog named Sophie, who would not always come when called. Steve had 5 grandchildren; Elisha, Isaac, Rebekah, Myles and Paige. He is survived by a brother; Ronald (Betsy) Spiegel of North Webster, Indiana and a sister; Cheryl (Dirk) Ferverda of Syracuse, Indiana, his sister-in-law Jan Singleton, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Rose, his wife Patricia, and most recently, his sister, Marlene Fugate.
Steve Angel was not merely friendly and kind, he was decent to his core. People gravitated towards his innate goodness, his indomitable spirit and his infectious, frenetic energy. His ever-ready laugh and beaming smile lit up every room… and the world will be a little dimmer now without him in it.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 11AM at the Plymouth Bible Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions can be directed to the Plymouth Bible Baptist Church, 102 Webster Ave. Plymouth, Indiana 46563.
Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan, Plymouth, Indiana 46563 is assisting the family with arrangements.
