Susan A. “Susie” Swain, 80, passed away with her loving family by her side at 1:05 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 in her Cherrywood Avenue home.
Susie was born February 8, 1935 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Alfred A. and Julia M. (Barnhouse) Shaffer. She graduated from an all girl’s school, St. Joseph Academy, with the class of 1953. She then attended Holy Cross School of Nursing in South Bend.
On August 10, 1957 in Mishawaka, Indiana Susie became the bride of Hilton J. Swain. The couple celebrated 57 wonderful years together this past August. He would precede her in death on November 16, 2014.
Susie worked in the nursing field for 20 years, and then for the Mayflower Nursing Home in Plymouth for three years before her retirement in 1995.
She loved to stay active in her medical field. Susie was a member of the Holy Cross School of Nursing Alumni, a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and a board member of the Life Enrichment Center. She also enjoyed looking after her fellow friends in their older years and was a member of AARP.
Susie and Hilton simply enjoyed life and were devoted members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth. Susie is survived by her loving children: Mary Janet Swain of Mishawaka, Michael J. (Michelle) Swain of Mishawaka, Daniel H. (Janet) Swain of Granger, IN, Andrew E. (Angie) Swain of Nappanee, IN, Paul A. (Debbie) Swain of Oak Harbor, WA, and Elizabeth M. (Gregg) Stanton of Plymouth. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and her sister, Martha A. Stoudt of Anderson, IN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers, Peter and David.
Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday July 2nd in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday July 3rd in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 613 N. Center Street, Plymouth, with Fr. William Kummer officiating.
